How we help communities
Field Education
01
Leave No Trace
At FSC we believe the most valuable resource humans have is our planet, so we enforce and teach adherence to Leave No Trace principles for all of our activities and to all of our members and leaders.
02
Gear Education
Gear can sometimes be the biggest barrier to getting outside, it's expensive, confusing, and easy to get wrong. We aim to take that pressure off. Our leaders answer questions and help members understand the essentials on every trip for the conditions, no egos involved. And when someone doesn't have what they need, our Gear Shed is there to help outfit them for the weekend.
03
Trail Practices
Being comfortable and confident outside is a skill, and it's one anyone can learn. On every trip, our experienced student leaders share the fundamentals that make time outdoors safe and enjoyable. Skills such as reading the trail, setting a sustainable pace, staying fueled and hydrated, and knowing what to do when plans change. These aren't learned in a book, they're habits gained from experience that build confidence, so each trip feels a little more like second nature than the last.
04
Leadership Experience
Our trips are only as good as the people leading them, we invest in our leaders. Members who have applicable experience and who want to gain real leadership experience that carries well beyond the trail, can apply to become what we call a Trip Lead. Leading a trip means learning to plan a route, manage a group, make calls under pressure, and keep everyone safe and stoked. It's hands-on responsibility and lifelong skills, backed and supported by a community of support and encouragement.
05
WFA Scholarships
We don't just ask our leaders to keep people safe, we make sure they're trained and certified. Every new trip lead has the opportunity to earn their Wilderness First Aid (WFA) certification at no cost to them, fully covered by FSC. That means no cost barrier to becoming a confident, capable leader, and it means every single trip goes out with a Trip Lead equipped to handle whatever the outdoors throws their way.
