Learning doesn't stop at the Trailhead
At Field Studies Collective we live and share our mission with a simple objective: create opportunities for students to adventure and learn outside together with minimal friction. We’re committed to helping one and all, regardless of experience or financial feasibility, outside together.

How it Started
Born out of a desire to share the outdoors with more people and build a community of beginners and expert outdoorspeople, the Field Studies Club was initially founded at California Polytechnic University – San Luis Obispo. The first trip was led in the Los Padres National Forest in September of 2022. Ever since that first trip the community hasn’t stopped growing.

How it's Going
Today, Field Studies is a 501(c)3 non-profit with two communities on the West Coast, over a 1,000+ active members, and trips that span from local day excursions to multi-week international adventures. Our communities work with the 501(c)3 Collective and in collaboration with each other to serve as many students as possible. Passionate Crews at both schools continue to volunteer their time to lead trips, execute unique experiential events, such as block printing or yoga, and create educational opportunities and content for members.

The future
Where it's Going
Field Studies Collective continues to help students start their own outdoor communities on campus. Our Gear Shed initiative currently stocks each community with enough essential gear to outfit up to 30 students every weekend, so no student ever has to buy their own to join in. And as our established communities grow, so does our ability to launch new ones; every community we build makes the next one easier to reach. It all serves a single goal: getting more students outside safely, from first-timers to seasoned experts, alongside certified leaders and without financial barriers. We're only getting started, and we can't wait to bring more campuses and more students outdoors with us.
